Peace studies PhD scholars choose a partner discipline for research and course work: psychology, anthropology, history, sociology, political science, or theology. The peace studies curriculum is combined with these traditional disciplines in the humanities and social sciences to create a special framework of study for each candidate. The University of Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, part of the Keough School of Global Affairs, is one of the world’s leading centers for the study of the causes of violent conflict and approaches for sustainable peace. Kroc Institute faculty and fellows manage interdisciplinary research on a broad range of topics related to peace and justice.
The University of Notre Dame du Lac is a private Catholic research university in Notre Dame, Indiana, outside the city of South Bend. It was established in 1842 by Edward Sorin. The main campus covers 1,261 acres (510 ha) in a suburban setting; it also contain a number of recognizable landmarks, such as the Golden Dome, the Word of Life mural (commonly known as Touchdown Jesus), Notre Dame Stadium, and the Basilica.
However, University of Notre Dame has been recognized as one of the top universities in the United States. It is arranged into seven schools and colleges. The School of Architecture is known for teaching New Classical Architecture and for awarding the annual Driehaus Architecture Prize. The University of Notre Dame offers over 50 year-long study programs abroad and over 15 summer programs.
The university’s graduate program has over 50 master, doctoral and professional degrees offered by the six schools, including the Notre Dame Law School and an MD–PhD program offered in combination with the Indiana University School of Medicine.
It also maintains a system of cultural venues, libraries, artistic and scientific museums, including the Hesburgh Library and the Snite Museum of Art. Majority of the university’s 8,000 undergraduates live on campus in one of 33 residence halls, each with its own traditions, legacies, events, and intramural sports teams.
The Peace Studies PhD Scholarships program at the Kroc Institute permits students to become exceptional scholars and teachers who contribute to a growing body of peacebuilding knowledge and practice with the aim of addressing violence and reducing human suffering.
Worth of Peace Studies PhD Scholarships for International Students
- The Peace Studies PhD Scholarships cover full tuition scholarship, generous stipend (Cost-of-living in South Bend), health insurance, and additional funding for conference travel and research activities.
- After graduation, scholars are fully trained and equipped for a wide variety of scholarly, teaching, and professional careers, including:
Interdisciplinary academic positions;
Positions requiring expertise in the peace and conflict subfields of anthropology, history, political science, psychology, sociology, or theology; and
Scholar-practitioner roles in intergovernmental, governmental, or nongovernmental organizations.
Eligibility for Peace Studies PhD Scholarships for International Students
- To be qualified for these scholarship, each candidate must hold at least a bachelor’s degree from an approved institution, domestic or international.
- It is also expected that candidates will have related training or research experience in the joint area to which they are applying. Previous graduate work is not required except in the case of Peace Studies and Theology for which a master’s degree in theology is needed.
