To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants may come from any country and must have recently earned a PhD within the last five years. Advanced ABD graduate students may apply, provided they complete their PhD before the fellowship begins.

    Scholarship Eligibility Criteria

    • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded in fields related to global democracy and human development.
    • Admissible Criteria:
      To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
      • Must have earned a PhD within the last five years.
      • Most successful applicants will work in a social science discipline or in history.
      • Advanced ABD graduate students may apply, but awards are contingent on completing the PhD before June 30 of the starting fellowship year.
      • Advanced English language proficiency is required.
      • Foreign nationals must have a valid passport and be able to obtain a J-1 Visa.

    Scholarship Application Guidelines:

    Applications must be submitted online through the Kellogg Institute’s Interfolio system. A complete application includes:

    • Cover letter addressing interest in the fellowship and specifying preferred term of stay.
    • Curriculum vitae.
    • Research project statement (6–10 double-spaced pages).
    • Project Abstract (150 words max).
    • Short Bio (200-300 words).
    • Three names and email addresses for letters of recommendation.
