The Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Reading has opened for the International PhD Studentships in Food Science to deserving students in the UK.

The Food Consortium CTP studentships are predominantly open for international students in the UK. The studentships award covers a stipend up to £15,609 per annum) or support for tuition fees at the standard UK rate.

Scholarship Eligibility:

  • Eligible Countries: All nationalities.
  • Eligible Course or Subjects: Students can apply for a PhD in Food, and Nutritional SciencesChemistry, Biochemistry, or Chemical, Biochemical Engineering offered by the university.
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
  • A postgraduate degree: MPhil, MEng, MSc, or relevant industrial experience would be an advantage. Applicants must be keen to engage with the project’s interdisciplinary nature, but expertise in all aspects is neither required nor expected.
  • The Food Consortium CTP studentships are predominantly open to students with UK residency. Although international students (including EU countries) can apply, no more than 30% of the projects can be allocated to international students due to funding rules.

  • Admission Requirements: Applicants should hold or expect to gain a minimum of a 2:1 Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Food Science/Technology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, or equivalent qualification.
  • Language Requirement: The students must submit scores of the following English language proficiency PhD programmes require a minimum: IELTS score of 6.5; however, some areas require a score of 7.0.


The university will provide a tax-free stipend of £16,062 p.a plus a £1400 enhancement from the industrial sponsor, support for tuition fees at the standard UK rate (now £4,596 p.a), and a contribution towards research costs. The University of Reading will cover the difference between the UK and international fees if an international student is appointed.
